Two groups of single cross yield trials which had been repeated over locations and years were subjected to analysis to determine the relative importance of general and specific combining ability and their interaction with locations and yrs. The variance components for the interactions involving specific combining ability and locations or yrs. were quite consistently larger than the corresponding estimates involving general combining ability. This suggests that the variance of specific combining ability includes not only the non-additive deviations due to dominance and epistasis, but also a considerable portion of the genotype[long dash]environment interaction. The relation of the findings reported to expectation for various types of recurrent selection is briefly discussed.
