For the most part, the material in Volume 1 deals with models for data, whereas that in Volume 2 is concerned with distributions of statistics (although this distinction is blurred by the fact that sampling distributionssuch as the t distribution-are also used as models for data). One feature of the arrangement of material is that coverage of goodness-of-fit tests is scattered throughout the book. The authors are aware of this and disclaim any attempt to provide thorough coverage of that topic, referring the reader instead to other sources.The expanded Chapter 22,“Extreme Value Distributions,” is particularly noteworthy. It presents a wealth of material on that topic and serves as a good source of information for the subject. References are given at the end of each chapter, a feature that allows one to conveniently see what has appeared up to the time of publication on the various topics considered. The lists of references are quite extensive. There is, additionally, an author index and also a subject index. The latter is also fairly extensive, occupying nine pages.
