In 1949, it was possible to present a short symposium covering most of the advances in the area of helminth biochemistry over the previous 20 years (von Brand, 1950). This entailed a review of the findings primarily of Dr. von Brand and a relatively small number of other investigators including Dr. Ernest Bueding who was a speaker at the same symposium. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in this area to the point where such a symposium topic could not possibly be covered in the allotted time period. I have, therefore, taken the liberty of selecting a limited few topics for discussion which, according to my own personal prejudices, serve to illustrate some broader concepts which have evolved during the past 20 years.
