Almost no dependable measurements of the respiratory quotient in marine animals are on record. The methods used have been laborious and the results variable and uncertain (see Gardner et al.,'22,'23, for references to the older literature). Only in the case of the very smallest organisms, capable of investigation by means of the Warburg manometer, or similar apparatus, do we have any reliable information. The respiration of the larger aquatic forms has not been adequately studied, in spite of its interest to comparative physiology. We have therefore attempted to adapt the Van Slyke manometric blood gas apparatus (Van Slyke and Neill,'24; Van Slyke,'27) to use in such work. We have secured a degree of success which, we believe, warrants the consideration of this technique by other workers in the field. We have been testing the method from time to time since the summer of 1929. Some of the earlier determinations were made by students in the physiology course at the Marine Biological Laboratory. Dr. Charles Wright and Dr. Albert Hegnauer were particularly helpful in these earlier determinations. The use of the Van Slyke apparatus for such work has been urged by Keys ('30) and by Oesting ('34), but neither gives any animal experiments. Oesting has, however, established the validity of the method for the analysis of oxygen and
