Barnes and Davenport ('37) have recently emphasized the need for additional determinations of the numbers of fibers and cells in the dorsal roots and ganglia of the cat before a one to one relationship between these elements can be said to apply generally to the entire spinal series of this animal. While their figures for fibers and cells occasionally reach a one to one ratio, most of their determinations show an excess of cells and they give several reasoiis for doubting the necessity of ascribing the low fiber counts to insufficient staining. The results of Duncan and Keyser ( '36) which indicated a one to one ratio in the thoracic roots and ganglia were correctly criticized on two scores ; first, selection of material on the basis of clarity of the fibers may have eliminated specimens that actually contained only a small number of fibers ; second, the cell counts were below actual values due to fixation in ammoniated alcohol. The present series of determinations were collected in an attempt to establish whether or not the one to one ratio was generally applicable to the cat. The very careful work of Foley and DuBois ('37) on the vagus has established beyond question that a near equality exists between cells of the dorsal root ganglion type and the proximal fibers arising from those cells.
