The effect on the strength characteristics and histology of the anterior cruciate ligaments from the knee joints of rabbits was studied after being in storage in saline for 5 hrs. at + 20[degree]C, in saline for 24 hrs. at + 4[degree]C, in deep freezing and in 10% formalin. In each group, 8 knees were Included. The fresh control material consisted of 14 knees. The parameters studied were the gross shape of the load elongation curve, the slope of the curve, the energy absorbed at failure, the failure load, elongation failure, dips in the recorder''s load curve and the failure site for the bone-ligament-bone preparation. Standard histologic methods were used. None of the modes of storage were satisfactory for the preservation of the tensile strength characteristics of the soft fresh connective tissue. Only formalin fixing proved satisfactory for histological studies. Biomechanical tests on collagen tissue must be performed as soon after removal as possible. The results are illustrated by photomicrographs, graphs, and tables. There is a bibliography of 10 references.
