Minimum likelihood allocation (MLA) is a new method for sequentially assigning [human] subjects to treatment groups in a clinical trial. Its aim is to balance the trial, i.e., to prevent various treatment groups from containing subjects who have much better or much worse prognoses than the average. The overall strategy of MLA is described, an illustrative example is provided and the availability of the required computer program is announced.
