Most cases of carotid cavernosus fistula (CCF) generally are believed to occour after trauma with fracture of the skull. We presume however, spontaneous CCF to occour much more frequent than anticipated. These cases primarly are misdiagnosted as conjunctivitis, pseudotumor or retrobulbar tumor. B-scan ultrasound has shown to be an reliable, non-invasive methode in the diagnosis of CCF. Several complications are seen in spontaneous CCF and the clinical course of the disease is not so benign as reported by other authors.
