An experimental design is described in which the venous system is isolated from cardiac, arterial, capillary, skeletal muscle and respiratory factors. During short periods of isolation, the pressure and volume characteristics of a large part of the venous system can be determined and related to changes in venous return. Evidence is presented showing that, in the open chest dog, adequate venous return is maintained by a 3-4 mm Hg "intravenous" pressure gradient operant between the venules and small veins and the vena cavae and contiguous large veins. Reflexly augmenting sympathetic tone by carotid occlusion, or vasodepressor drugs, increases the "intravenous" pressure gradient to 5-10 mm Hg and produces a concomitant increase in venous return. Increased venous return of venous origin is an important factor in the arterial pressor response to carotid occlusion.
