Research suggests that learners’ motivation and orientation vary depending on individuals and change over time. This longitudinal study looked at diary entries recorded by twenty-nine Japanese university students in one academic year and attempted to explore changes in orientations. By examining the frequency of recorded orientations, it was found that learners demonstrated different orientations at different times; some of the orientations displayed distinct features. It is hoped that this study will help further examine EFL learners’ orientations in a Japanese university setting.
