The blue-green algae 91 latter have always been present and it is salutory to read the writings of late nineteenth-century workers on the roles of spores, heterocysts, gas vacuoles, polyphosphate bodies etc.(reviewed by Fritsch, 1945). At the time of inauguration of the British Phycological Society modern physiological studies were just beginning and in Fogg's 1953 monograph on The Metabolism of Algae only about two dozen papers on blue-green algae were mentioned and over half of these were of historical interest only. However, the introduction of defined culture media (Chu, 1942), 14C (see eg Calvin et al., 1951) and 15N (Burris et al., 1943) tracer techniques, chromatographic techniques (see eg Smith, 1958) and electron microscopy (first used in the study of blue-green algae by Niklowitz & Drews (1956, 1957)) and a series of detailed physiological studies by Fogg (1942, 1944, 1949, 1951, 1952) provided the springboard for more recent studies including our own on the subcellular and cellular biology of these photosynthetic prokaryotes.
