RESULTSOne hundred and fifty-two patients were included in these analyses; thus, 304 intervals were analyzed. Ninety two percent (n 140) of the patients were women and 8%(n 12) were men. Of them, 29 (19%) were Hispanics from Texas, 15 (10%) Hispanics from Puerto Rico, 77 (51%) African Americans, and 31 (20%) whites. The mean age (SD) was 35.0 (11.4) years; the mean disease duration from diagnosis to the case intervals was 4.4 years and it was 4.9 years for the control intervals; the difference not being statistically significant. Within these intervals, 28 exposures to statins had occurred 13 exposures (8.6%) for the cases and 15 (9.9%) for the controls. Exposure to statins was not associated with a decrease in disease activity (odds ratio 0.82, 95% confidence interval 0.34–1.98, P 0.66).
