The lacrimal glands secrete a mixture of proteins, nutrients, hormones, growth factors, and immunoglobulins in an approximately isotonic electrolyte solution. Lacrimal'acinar cells release secretory proteins, such as lysozyme and lactoferrin, by the classical merocrine mechanism. The acini use transcytotic mechanisms to secrete immunoglobulins, primarily secretory immunoglobulin A (IgA), and at least one protein hormone, prolactin [1, 2]. Lacrimal duct cells contain epidermal growth factor (EGF)[3], and they appear to release it both into the forming lacrimal gland fluid and into the lacrimal interstitium, where it may function as a paracrine mediator.
