Retinal pigment epithelium cultured from normal rats phagocytize large amounts of rod outer segment fragments isolated from normal and RCS rats with inherited retinal degeneration. Cultured RCS rat pigment epithelium rarely ingested outer segment material, although the cells extend cellular processes around fragments of either type. Normal and RCS pigment epithelium phagocytized polystyrene spheres. RCS rat pigment epithelial cells apparently contain a defect in the mechanism for phagocytizing outer segments.
