Feeding methods are described for 12 Florida ascoglossans. Relationships between size and shape of radular teethand dimensions of food algae are analysed. Feeding in a diatom-eating species (Eylsia evelinae) is described for the first time. The suctorial feeding ofAscobulla ullaand the structure of its radula and alimentary system clearly reveal that it is an ascoglossan, not a cephalaspid. The very complicated method of feeding inOxynoespp. is considered an evolutionary “dead end”, and the branching of the digestive gland and position of pharyngeal appendices seem to indicate that the Elysiidae did not evolve from the Oxynoidae. New and detailed observations on feeding inElysia ornata, Placida kingstoni, andErcolania funereashow that after cell sap has been sucked into the pharynx, it is returned to the algal filament. This process may be repeated once or twice before the cell sap is eventually pumped into the stomach. Cell sap is probably mixed with saliva in the pharynx to reduce its viscosity, and the pharyngeal regurgitation facilitates withdrawal of the remaining sap.
