In March 1975 a virus was isolated from a pool of 214 Culicoides of mixed species trapped at the Beatrice Hill Research Station, Northern Territory. Following its identification as an arbovirus and tentative identification as an orbivirus it was sent to the Yale Arbovirus Research Unit in the USA. Here it was identified in October 1977, having taken its turn with other viruses for identification, as bluetongue virus. From a study of serum samples collected from sentinel herds of cattle at Beatrice Hill and elsewhere in 1975, neutralizing antibody to bluetongue virus developed in sentinel cattle at Beatrice Hill and Douglas-Daly research stations in the northern part of the Northern Territory.
