METHODNine female and eleven male speakers, all with normal speech and hearing, read twenty-one passages, each having an equal number of syllables, under conditions of no feedback delay (control condition) and. 18 second delay (experimental condition). None of the subjects had previously experienced DAF. Each test passage was constructed so as to contain a 3: 1 ratio of one of the following four categories of consonant sounds: glide, plosive, fricative or nasal. Each passage contained 24 syllables. For example, a plosive-type passage contained a ratio of three plosives for every glide, nasal, and fricative sound. To provide an adequate sample of each English phoneme in different contexts, twentyone different passages were prepared. Within those twenty-one passages, each consonant category (except nasal) was represented by six passages, three containing a preponderance of voiced sounds and three a preponderance of unvoiced sounds. Since there are no voiceless nasals this category contained only three passages. The reading materials were obtained from the sentences in Fairbanks's
