Forty-six stages in the development of the chick from the beginning of incubation until hatching are descr. The series is based on morphological characteristics and is independent of the time of incubation. The principal criteria used are condition of the primitive streak, stages 1-4; head-process and head-fold, stages 5-6; number of pairs of somites, stages 7-14; shape and dimensions of limb-buds, stages 15-22; condition of limbs and visceral arches, stages 23-29; scleral papillae, eyelids, and feather-germs, stages 30-38; length of beak and of longest toe, stages 39-44. The series is illustrated by 14 plates (three of them double) containing 6 drawings of visceral arches, 12 drawings of limb-buds, 48 photographs of whole embryos, and 44 photographs of individual limbs.
