The influence of temperature on the meiosis of Tradescantia bracteata and Uvularia perfoliata is considered. High temperatures affect the number and position of the chiasmata and chromosome coiling. Increase in temperature results in an increase in the frequency of interstitial chiasmata. At still higher temperatures the frequencies of both interstitial and terminal chiasmata fall. Eventually there is complete asynapsis. Prophase stages can be analyzed in heat-treated material of T. bracteata. Spiralization can be studied; and at high temperatures, major coils open out and finally disappear. Features of the chromosomes not normally visible, e.g., constrictions, can be seen after high temperature treatments. The evolutionary significance of these changes is discussed. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: G. J. Dowrick
