An apparatus is described for continuous culture of unicellular algae. The algal suspension is contained in a 5-mm. annulus between 2 glass tubes. Constant density of suspension is obtained by a photometric device which automatically dilutes the suspension so that a culture is maintained continuously at one point on the growth curve. Part of the suspension is harvested at any desired time interval, leaving part as an inoculum for the next interval. Data presented on one culture grown over a period of 3 weeks indicate that the physiol. characteristics of the algae are constant and reproducible day after day. The apparatus provides a source of exptl. material of high uniformity and/or a means of stabilizing internal variables so that the relation of culture conditions to photosynthetic behavior may be explored. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: Jack Myers
