We have isolated a small family of four genes that code for the a-tubulins of Drosophila melanogaster. In this paper we summarize our observations (Kalfayan and Wensink 1981 and in prep.; Loewenberg 1981) about the differences between these genes and their transcripts. These observations led us to conclude that each of the a-tubulin genes has a different nucleotide sequence and that at least three of them have different patterns of transcription during Drosophila development. In addition, at least two of the genes have more than one RNA product. The concentrations of the different RNA products from a single gene also vary independently during development of the organism.
