With sun worshipping beinj^ on the increase, derm.itologists are being confronted more and more with sun-related skin problems and with the problem of protection from the sun. This problem is compounded by many patients with light-induced skin diseases having already used various sun products before they come to the dermatologist. In addition, the vast range of suntan products on the market makes selection difficult. Therefore, we found it necessary to survey the ultraviolet ;UVl absorbers used in commercially available sunscreening products on the Belgian market. Our first objective was to check the value of the UV absorbers used in these products, and our second was to find oul which UV filters were being most commonly used by industry. We contacted as many individual manufacturers and distributors of sunscreening products as we could find in Belgium, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Monaco, the Netherlands, and the USA. We were able to trace 257 different suntan products (63 brands) that were commercially available on the Belgian market in 1980. The manufacturers were kind enough to give us the complete chemical names and the concentrations (]f Ihe UV absorber or absorbers used in their products. An identification system based on the chemical grouping system proposed by Ziolkowsky' and the coding system of Liem and Hilderink^ was used to classify the UV absorbers (Table 1). Each UV al)sorl>er was assigned a code related to its chemical structure (Table 2).
