Four insecticides were evaluated for the control of vine weevil larvae in potted polyanthus plants together with a standard aldrin treatment and untreated controls. Surface applications of carbofuran granules did not reduce larval numbers. Although both gave good control, fonofos granules were more effective than chlorpyrifos. Recommended application rates of a micro-encapsulated fonofos formulation failed to give complete control which was only attained with a compost admixture of aldrin. There was indirect evidence that overwintering vine weevils, emerging from glasshouses, may extended the outdoor egg-laying season. The need for complete control is discussed and it is concluded that none of the treatments examined provides a viable alternative to aldrin for the control of vine weevil larvae.
