When dog''s defibrinated blood was made to flow rapidly in a glass tube of about 100/x radius, the optical transmittance of a marginal zone, 5-20[mu] from the tube wall, became greater. The width of this zone and the magnitude of the increase in transmittance varied very greatly in different samples of blood, but showed no correlation with the magnitude of the reduction in apparent viscosity which accompanied the increase in rate of flow. It is concluded that in these experiments, axial movement of the red cells, and the formation of a marginal zone of reduced red cell concentration, was quantitatively inadequate to account for the reduction in the apparent viscosity of the blood with increase in the rate of flow.
