Retroviruses are a heterogeneous group of plus strand RNA viruses which replicate their RNA genome through a DNA intermediate. During their life cycle the retroviruses interact with the host in a variety of ways. Thus, viral gene products interact with cellular proteins and modulate or subvert their function. Furthermore, the proviral DNA integrates into the cellular genome introducing mutations which alter the biology of the infected cell. These interactions between the virus and the host and the phenomena associated with them determine the pathogenicity of retroviruses (Lazoand Tsichlis1990 and this volume).
