During the past half-century. the grciv\tli nf the human brain an (the changing relations uf brain weight to body weight, both in iiiar and other animals, have been investigated by numerous authors, nota bly Dubois, Lapicque, Donaldson, Brummelkamp, von Bonin, an (many others. But, while these studies have established inany facts the underlying principles have not yet been fully revealed. My ow1 studies have approached the classic problem of the relations of braii weight to body weight from the direction of physical anthropology with the results set forth in the present paper. For the most part, the data were brought together in the Aiiiericai Museum of Natural History, where I am under obligation to many and very especially to Dr. W. K. Gregory. Dr. HB Latimer of th University of Kansas did me the extraordinary favor of copying hi extensive and unique series of measurements on body and brain weight of fetal and adult cats. I wish also to thank Dr. R. W. Miner for hi editorial work in preparing the manuscript for printing. Acknowledgment is due Miss Lillian Guglielmi, Secretary of th Department of Anatomy, New I’nrk Medical College, for typing th manuscript.
