THE process for extruding Teflon tetrafluoroethylene resin in the form of a lubricated paste was developed to attain extrusion rates appreciably higher than those attainable by the more conventional high temperature processes. In a paper by Lontz, Jaffe, Robb, and Happoldt (%), the methods of preparing the lubricated compositions and some simple techniques for fabricating tapeand wire coverings were described. The de-velopment of paste extrusion has continued along several lines. In the work described here the objective was to investigate more carefully the mechanisms and variables of the process in orderto achieve improved performance and to permit the design of im-proved equipment. Therefore, instead of using a constant-rate wire coater, a simple rheometer was employed in which mono-filaments could be extruded at constant pressure.
