IT MAY APPEAR surprising that in a group of organisms such as the Cytophagaceae, classically characterized by outstanding morphological features such as cell shape and gliding movement, there should exist taxonomic problems not only of internal subdivision but also of differentiation from other bacterial groups. The generic name Cytophaga was% st used by Winogradsky (1929) for certain aerobic cellulosedecomposing organisms, although it had been applied earlier as a specific epithet by Hutchinson and Clayton (1919) in Spirochta cytophaga, now known as Sporocytophaga myxococcoides. The genus was extended by the inclusion of species attacking agar (Stenier, 1940; Humm, 1946), starch and hemicellulose (Fuller & Norman, 1943) and chitin (Stanier, 1947) but all species were characterized by being flexuous rods showing creeping motility on solid surfaces. Recently evidence has begun to accumulate (De Ley Q van Muylem, 1963; Colwell & Mandel, 1964) that certain organisms not apparently showing creeping motility may be more properly classified with the nonfruiting myxobacteria than with the eubacteria.
