There is a long debateon working across disciplinary perspectives withingeography, taken up since 2003 in the ‘Conversationsacross the divide’ sessions at the RGS-IBG confer-ences. ‘Conversations across the divide’ have devel-oped into ‘activity across the divide’, for example, inthe British-based Rural Economy and Land Use (RELU)Programme, in which every project supported had tobe interdisciplinary across the social and natural sci-ences. The aim of the conference session was, first, toreflect on practices across the divide within, andbeyond, geography. Secondly, it aimed to examinewhere these theoretical and empirically based activi-ties are taking us. Five of the oral presentations havebeen developed into papers presented in this SpecialSection, four were from research conducted withinRELU-funded programmes. We talk here about interdisciplinarity as a practiceassociated with the development of systematic analy-ses bringing together the natural and social world. It isa practice that brings to the fore the emergent proper-ties of complex systems and the need for methodologi-cal pluralism as a way to understand multiplydetermined situations in the world. The papers in thisSpecial Section explore aspects of interdisciplinarypractices more closely. We argue that the need forjustifying interdisciplinary research seems to havepassed and the benefits of, and problems associatedwith doing, interdisciplinary research are widely rec-ognised.
