General: All certified teachers in Pennsylvania must earn 180 professional development hours every five years to maintain active certification status. The Pennsylvania Department of Education requires each university to name one person or office as the contact for non-credit programs offered to teachers, and we must submit a renewal application for this status every 3 years. The Gelfand Center supports teacher professional development at Carnegie Mellon by helping all departments to align programs with the requirements of the Department of Education and by reporting hours to the state’s recordkeeping system following the activities.
