The investigations were carried out on 15 unanesthetized, curarized rabbits. Septal cell activity and hippocampus eeg were studied under the action of various drugs. Eserine was used to induce both theta activity in the hippocampus and burst firing pattern of septal cells. Hexobarbital, scopolamine, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), and urethane were used to abolish this eserine-induced theta activity. There is, however, a remarkable difference in the action of these drugs on the septal cell activity. Hexobarbital (30 mg/kg) and scopolamine (0.3 mg/kg) abolish the theta rhythm and the regular burst firing pattern of the septal cells simultaneously, thereby indicating a depressant effect on the subcortical regions of the limbic system. LSD (0.1 mg/kg), on the other hand, abolishes the theta rhythm without changing the septal burst activity, thereby indicating a direct action on the hippocampus. After high doses of urethane (about 2 gAg) the theta rhythm disappears whereas the septal cells continue to discharge in bursts although with decreasing frequency. This indicates an incomplete depressant effect on the subcortical limbic centers and also a direct effect upon the hippocampus. Nicotine (3-6 mg/kg) induces hippocampus seizure potentials. Septal cell activity may or may not be influenced by these seizure potentials. An influence of hippocampus seizure potentials on septal cell activity may be due to a spread of the seizure activity into the septum.
