METHODS Case and control ascertainment Having obtained approval from our local research ethics committee, blood samples were analysed from an unrelated Caucasian cohort of 140 POAG patients and 73 healthy individuals, matched for age and gender, from the north east area of England. POAG patients underwent Goldmann tonometry, slit lamp biomicroscopy of the optic discs, Humphrey full threshold 24: 2 visual fields, and four mirror gonioscopy. Controls underwent the same examination, omitting gonioscopy and substituting suprathreshold fields for full threshold fields.
