As if there were but one ‘crisis.’ As if one could reasonably circumscribe what we call ‘the nineteenth century.’ As if, even granting that one might decide to remain within the confines of philosophy and intellectual history, one could reduce such events as Darwin, Marx, Nietzsche, and Freud to a single unified fable.
