MethodsParticipants. The clinical records of all female first presentations from January 1981 to December 1984 to the specialist eating disorders service in Christchurch, New Zealand, were abstracted. Eighty-nine women with definite or probable AN by DSM-III-R criteria (APA, 1987) were identified. Considerable efforts were made to locate these individuals by using hospital charts, telephone directories, and national records (electoral rolls, marriage registers, and a national mortality register) in New Zealand and Australia. Of the 89 individuals identified, three could not be located, one had died, eight did not consent fully to participate, and, upon interview, seven did not have a lifetime diagnosis of AN. The current age ranged from 23 to 72 years, and all 70 met DSM-III-R criteria for AN at some point in their lives. One woman was excluded because she reported bulimia before the onset of AN. In all others, BN developed either after (N= 27) or concurrently with the onset of AN (N= 10).Measures. The Diagnostic Interview for Genetic Studies (Nurnberger et al., 1994) was used and supplemented with a section to collect detailed information about the eating disorder and a module developed by KR Merikangas, Ph. D., which operationalized the DSM-III-R criteria for overanxious disorder and separation anxiety disorder.
