[en] Data available concerning diffusion in graphite are reviewed. This leads to the paradox that, while graphite is a highly anisotropic material, diffusion is almost isotropic. Furthermore, unlike self-diffusion in metals, diffusion does not occur by a vacancy process. The known information about point defects, which is subsequently used to examine possible diffusion processes, is considered. These processes are contrasted with diffusion in other elements. Finally, the process of graphitization is briefly considered
