This chapter aims to consider intergenerational relations in families in the light of the social structures that shape them. It is thus designed to act as a complement to the consideration of theoretical approaches to these relations (see Olk, this volume; Alanen, this volume). I set out here, briefly, the standpoint that informs this chapter, and go on to consider intergenerational relations under three headings: socialization; the changing family; and interdependencies.
