This study examines family members' sense of empowerment and satisfaction with mental health services for a sample of Laotian refugees who provide care for a mentally ill relative in outpatient psychiatric treatment. The purposes of this pilot study were to assess family members' level of satisfaction with mental health services, to explore the role of family empowerment, and to identify family concerns regarding mental health service problems and needs. Findings indicated that family empowerment was positively correlated with patient's duration of illness, education level, and length of time in the United States. Additionally, family empowerment was negatively correlated with patient's age and age of illness onset. Satisfaction with services was positively correlated with family member's level of education. Interestingly, empowerment and satisfaction with services were not associated (r=. 18, ns).
