Hindgut homogenate from worker caste termites of Reticulitermes speratus generated a significantly greater amount of hydrogen under anaerobic conditions (1.9 μmol/termite) than that under aerobic conditions (0.3 μmol/termite) for 96 h at 27±1℃. The maximum hydrogen production rate was also significantly higher under anaerobic conditions (39 nmol/termite/h) than that under aerobic conditions (14 nmol/termite/h). The addition of monosaccharides to the hindgut homogenate increased the amounts of hydrogen produced under anaerobic and aerobic conditions. The amounts of hydrogen produced by adding arabinose (291 μmol/termite), galactose (266 μmol/termite), or xylose (221 μmol/termite) were greater than those obtained by adding glucose (70 μmol/termite) or mannose (94 μmol/termite) for an incubation period of 96 h at 27±1℃ under anaerobic conditions, while adding arabinose (267 μmol/termite), galactose (229 μmol/termite), or xylose (195 μmol/termite) resulted in greater hydrogen production than adding glucose (50 μmol/termite) or mannose (81 μmol/termite) under aerobic conditions.
