Two essentially different terminological systems (as well as other variations upon these) are at present in use for description of the Early Cycladic period. These are discussed against the background of a survey of the material evidence for the EC period and of some general observations on terminology and approach. Since evidence for genuine cultural distinctions within the EC period is lacking (with one possible exception), we see no justification for adopting the new "culture" terminology. The traditional system (EC I, II, III), with slight modification, remains the most appropriate and allows a much more constructive and illuminating historical approach to the material.
