Discussion of the breeding goals in farm animals is topical, for the following reasons. Substantial changes have recently taken place in the international economy, affecting the production of life's necessities and future prospects, and further changes appear likely. Many significant changes haw occurred on the technical side of animal management, feeding, breeding and hygiene, creating new possibilities and needs for the development of animal pro-duction and breeding.The fruits of the breeding work of today can partly be harvested only after many years. Hence it is important at an early stage to define the goals as clearly as possible, so that one does not need to change them too often. They should preferably be known at least 10-15 years in advance.
