In cats and monkeys, the anterior cingulate gyrus was strychninized and firing demonstrated to points anatomically similiar to the suppressor strip areas. Firing from the cat brain was to the presumed location of 8s, 2s, 3s, and 19s. Firing to 8s only was seen in the monkey in addition to those areas described by others. Electrical stimulation was done with a square wave stimulator using a frequency of 40/sec, 2 V. and a sigma of 10. This produced atypical motor movements, arrest of motor movements, arrest of respiration, and electroencephalographic changes. The latter were of 4 types. Strychnine spikes were suppressed from the ipsilateral hemisphere, sleep (or dial) spindles were suppressed on the ipsilateral side, spontaneous electrocortical activity was suppressed bilaterally and seizure discharges were produced bilaterally as well as ipsilaterally. These effects all occurred independantly of each other and suggested mediation by different pathways. Direct stimulation of the caudate nucleus did not eliminate strychnine spikes but did eliminate sleep spinules in one animal. Removal of the caudate nucleus prevented further supression of sleep spindles.
