The histological changes in anterior pituitary glands induced by vitamin Edeficient diet in male animals have been observed by many workers with the light microscope. However, the results of these observations are not yet definite. Van Wagenen (1925), Nelson (1933), Muller & Muller (1937), Barrie (1937), Biddulph & Meyer (1941) and Griesbach, Bell & Livingston (1957) have reported that the pituitaries of male rats fed such a diet showed castration changes; Herrick, Eide & Snow (1952) reported a reduced number of active basophilis, while Lee (1960) found that 'castration' changes are not so marked, but that enlarged acidophil cells appear. The cytology of the anterior pituitary of the mouse has recently been studied electron microscopically (Barnes, 1962; Barnes, 1963; Ichihara, 1967), and Barnes (1963) reviewed the cellular origins of five of six known adenohypophysial hormones, studying oestrous, castrated and thyroxine-treated mice. Thus, on the basis of former work, it has been possible to undertake the present study of the effect of vitamin E-deficiency upon the ultrastructure of the anterior pituitaries, with special reference to hormonal function.
