Phytolith classification has generally followed pre-Darwinian paradigms, marked by idealized or simplified models, anecdotal descriptive nomenclature and lack of attention to individual variation. In this context, redundancy has appeared to present a problem in taxon identification. However, the polymorphic mode of phytolith production does not fit well the monomorphic, typological approach used for classification of other microfossils. Some recent redundancy-reducing methods include use of phytolith size, frequency and three-dimensional shape characteristics; additional morphometric characteristics derived from stereology offer additional ways to reduce redundancy. Test results indicate that these methods (which include more measures of individual variation) are more robust than methods of central tendency.
