Ovarian cancer affects 23,400 women in the United States annually and is responsible for 13,900 deaths.[1] It is the fifth most common cause of cancer deaths among women in the United States and the most frequent cause of cancer deaths from gynecological malignancies. For the majority of patients, the treatment of ovarian cancer requires a multimodal approach, including surgery and chemotherapy. Surgery alone is not curative, except in a minority of patients presenting with well-differentiated stage 1 disease. Although overall response rates of up to 80% have been reported for postoperative, platinum-based chemotherapy, more than 75% of women with advanced stage ovarian cancer ultimately die of their disease, within five years of diagnosis.[2] The management of advanced epithelial ovarian carcinoma has changed over the past decade. Novel agents with unique mechanisms of action have been incorporated into first-line settings, with the goal to impact the overall survival in ovarian cancer.[6, 10, 11]
