The effect of the pericardium on the pressure-volume curve on the left ventricle has been studied following anoxic arrest in eight dogs. A large volume intraventricular balloon was employed. The pericardium is found to elevate left ventricular pressure and reduce volume over the entire range of pressures studied (0–20 cm. H2O). Removal of the pericardium at 10 cm. H2O reduces LV pressures 4.6 ± 1.0 cm. H2O, and an additional 6.2 ± 1.1 cc./100 gm. LV are required to restore pressure to its previous value. At 20 cm. H2O pressure is reduced 6.8 ± 2.0 cm. H2O. The volume change at 13.6 cm. H2is 7.2 ± 1.6 cc./100 gm. LV. These data are well substantiated by previously published results and support the view that at normal end-diastolic volumes, the heart is gently supported by a pericardial envelope of large compliance and ample elasticity.
