It is well-known that several neuropeptides including neurotensin, epidermal growth factor, adrenocorticotrophic hormone, calcitonin, neurokinin A, somatostatin, bombesin/gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) and fl-endorphin are produced by! small cell carcinoma of the lung (SCLC) and cell lines derived from these tumors (Roth and Barchas, 1986; Bepler et al., 1988). Receptors for only a few of these peptides have been characterized in some SCLC cell lines (Moody et al., 1985; Roth and Barchas, 1986; Bepler et al., 1988) leading to the suggestion that specific peptides could regulate the growth of SCLC in an autocrine fashion similar to bombesin/GRP (Cuttitta et al., 1985). However, very few of these peptides have been shown to stimulate growth and proliferation of SCLC. Since the autocrine hypothesis proposes that cells produce and secrete a'hormone-like'growth factor which can interact with membrane receptors on the cell surface and in turn act to stimulate its own growth and proliferation, not all peptides found to be present in SCLC function as autocrine peptides. Using a modification of the human tumor clonogenic assay (Hamburger and Salmon, 1977) this communication represents the first demonstration that fl-endorphin and neurotensin stimu-
