Evolutionary psychologists have had notable success in documenting human mate preferences and their predictable variability across individuals, genders, contexts, and cultures. Research attempting to bridge the gap between these ideal preferences and actual mating outcomes, however, commonly comes up short. This chapter details the elements of a novel theoretical model of human mate selection that takes into account three critical elements of mate choice: the multidimensional nature of human preference integration; the multiplicity of human mate preferences; and the constraints on mate choice imposed by mating markets that possess multiple individuals acting on their preferences in a multidimensional manner. It combines extant data on human mating with computer simulations to show how accounting for these elements in models of mate choice is essential for observing the true effects of mate preferences on downstream mating outcomes such as attraction and mate choice. Continuing to apply agent-based modeling and multidimensional analyses of mate preferences could prove useful for researchers hoping to understand the links between preferences and attraction, the roles preferences play in regulating ongoing relationships, and the ways in which human mating behavior shapes the nature of human mating markets and human evolution.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
