The sorption of Cs{sup +}, Sr{sup 2+}, U(VI), Am(III), and Pu(IV) and oxidized charcoal (OCC) is investigated. The OCC was prepared by mild oxidation of carbonized wood by air. The sorption was studied under static and dynamic conditions from solutions containing tracer amounts ({approximately}10{sup -5} Ci/liter) of the radionuclides. The OCC is highly selective for Cs{sup +}, Am(III), and Pu(IV). The maximal sorption of Cs{sup +} is observed on samples prepared by oxidizing carbonized wood for 2-3 h (K{sub d} = 5400 cm{sup 3}/g). Strontium is practically not sorbed whereas U(VI) is sorbed much more poorly than Pu(IV) and Am(III).
