ResultsTotal plasma PC concentration increased steadily throughout pregnancy, from a value of 2.16±0.40 mM at 16 weeks to a maximum of 2.93±0.57 mM at delivery (p< 0.001), and declined postnatally (table 1). PC concentration in fetal cord plasma was considerably lower (1.28±0.39 mM). The same 16 molecular species of PC were resolved in all plasma samples; over 50% of PC species in maternal plasma contained linoleate (18: 2) at the sn-2 position, while fetal plasma was enriched in species containing 20: 4 (31%). Concentrations in maternal plasma of the six PC species containing unsaturated fatty acid are given in table 1. The increase in plasma PC concentration was accounted for totally by a selective increase in species containing sn-1 16: 0; concentrations of species containing sn-1 18: 0 did not alter throughout gesta-tion.
