An alternative molecular imprinting technique is used to obtain polymeric membranes for enantioselective separations. In this technique, the "molecular memory" of the print molecule is introduced into the membrane at the same time that the polymeric membrane is being cast from its polymer solution. We have found that a membrane which contains an oligopeptide residue from an L-amino acid and is imprinted by a L-amino acid derivative recognizes the L-isomer in preference to the corresponding D-isomer, andvice versa. By application of electrodialysis, the amino acid isomer which is preferentially adsorbed in the membrane may be transported across the membrane.
